The Auction:
West   North   East   South
pass      2C      pass    2
pass     3NT    all pass

You reach a sound 3NT contract after a standard auction. West leads the ♠ 10. How do you like your chances?

The contract is excellent, but unfortunately not laydown. Taking a diamond double finesse (running the 10, followed by playing a low diamond to the Queen) gives you a 75% chance of making the contract. Before trying out diamonds, you can give yourself an extra chance by cashing the A. If either opponent has a singleton heart honor, you can establish a heart for your ninth trick. If both opponents follow with low cards, you can revert back to taking the diamond double finesse. Note that cashing the A is a safe play, as opponents can cash only two hearts, which is not enough to set you. As the cards are, both diamond honors are offside, so establishing a heart trick is required to make the game.

As the cards are, declarer can actually make an overtrick by cashing the A and leading a heart up to the 10. We leave it as an exercise for the reader to analyze how to make the overtrick (using the double dummy sover as an aid).

Bridge Baron's Line of Play
Bridge Baron's line of play was quite close to the recommended line. Bridge Baron played four rounds of clubs, and then cashed the A (a slightly inferior play) before cashing the A, and then developed a heart trick to make the contract.

Par Contract Analysis:
The Par contract is 4NT by North-South.
